Frames That Compete with the View

A solitary autumn-colored tree and a small moon stand beneath a starry sky, mirrored in extremely calm water.

Some mirrors disappear behind what they show, but an ornate frame insists on remaining visible. Carved curves, metallic highlights, and dense decorative forms can occupy as much attention as the reflected interior. In a close crop, the frame becomes a landscape of ridges and shadows, while the glass offers only a narrow wedge of bright space. A compact mirror creates a different kind of emphasis: its small circular boundary turns looking into a handheld, deliberate act. In both cases, the object around the reflection shapes the experience of the image. The frame is not neutral decoration. It controls scale, directs the eye, and gives the reflected fragment a physical presence.
